Two Hours
The oceans off Durban were once the hunting grounds for the largest land-based whaling stations on earth. Now, 40 years after the Indian Ocean was declared a whale sanctuary these animals are thriving. Every winter hundreds of Humpback whales make a great journey up from the freezing Antarctic waters and pass the warm tropical ocean just off Durban. This is the “Humpback Highway” where we may encounter these 40 ton animals, singing and breaching as part of their courting ritual.
